Welcome to Third Grade in Room 103!
flying_books
Another week in, and conferences just around the corner!  It is hard to believe that it is November already.  I have been enjoying compiling my 3rd graders work so far and am looking forward to talking to all the parents this coming Thursday and Friday.

The Fall Fling party was a big success.  Much thanks to those who helped out.  My students are already asking about our next parties so I'm thinking they had a good time.

I have to say there are some really neat connections being made by the third graders in my class--some planned by their teacher, others not.  In reading we had been looking at and working with a song called "What Will They Think of Next" that dealt with inventions and technology and lead the class to some really rich discussions.  As table groups the kids were given the task of collaborating on coming up with an invention.  At some tables it was smooth sailing, but at others it was not.

This led to a class discussion of the nature of being creative in a group, and how it is not easy, and disagreement is just part of the process.   I assured them that it is hard for adults as well, but the results of collaboration are often much stronger than the efforts of only one mind.  As luck would have it, the next day (Friday) the kids got to see a really neat presentation put on by the Bakken Museum.  The show basically opened with the exact same idea, that of collaboration being difficult,  being presented.  The timing was great and by my students faces I could see the connections being made.  The rest of the show was excellent as well.

On a less fun note, the flu has found room 103.  We are washing hands, using hand sanitizer, and I'm wiping off surfaces as much as I can.  Still, by Friday 4 kids were out with the flu.  Good luck with staying healthy.  I'll try to do the same and I guess we'll all just have to take it as it comes.

That's all for now.

Thanks,
Mr. Budin
